Quantum Materials Corp. plans to more than double its workforce after installing equipment to ramp up production of quantum dots.

The San Marcos-based company plans to immediately hire four workers after it acquires new intermediate quantum dot production equipment, scheduled for June. The additional equipment will require hiring another seven to 10 employees, CEO Stephen Squires said Tuesday.

All of the new workers would be based in San Marcos, he said.

Quantum Materials (OTCQB: QTMM), founded in 2008, employs 12 workers, four of whom are sales and marketing specialists based in California. The company commercializes quantum dots that act as semiconductors for nanotechnology.

Last year, Quantum Materials relocated its tetrapod quantum dot laboratories to San Marcos’s STAR Park. The park – named after its focus on science, technology and academic research – is a nonprofit incubator that works in cooperation with Texas State University.
